Committee and Advisory Groups
-
The role of the project steering committee is:
To provide overall supervision for a project on behalf of the study's Sponsor and Funder and to ensure that it is conducted to a rigorous standard.
To provide advice, through its Chair, to the study's funder, sponsor, Chief Investigator, host institution, and contractor
To concentrate on the study's progress, adherence to the protocol, and public safety (where appropriate), and to consider new information of relevance to the research question
To uphold the rights, safety and well-being of the participants: these are the most important considerations and should prevail over the interests of the research
To ensure appropriate ethical and other approvals are obtained in line with the project plan
To agree proposals for substantial protocol amendments and provide advice to the sponsor and funder regarding approvals of such amendments
To provide advice to the investigators on all aspects of the study

The project will also have a dedicated public involvement group. The public involvement group, which we call our ‘Public and Community Advisory Group’ is an advisory committee rather than having a formal governance role in the execution of the project in the way that the Project Steering Committee does. The Public and Community Advisory Group will, however, be chaired by an independent member of the public who is also a member of the Project Steering Committee, ensuring an awareness and influence for public involvement into the formal governance of the project.
The role of the Public and Community Advisory Group will be to:
To meet at least annually (with four workshops pre-planned over the project duration)
To provide advice and guidance on the project’s compliance with the UK Standards for Public Involvement
To provide advice on all aspects of the project (from design through management, undertaking, analysis and dissemination), but particularly in relation to ensuring due consideration of the perspectives of members of the public in the conduct of the research and dissemination of its findings
To provide advice on the recruitment of research participants, including ensuring the accessibility of research materials and consideration of how best to reach potentially under-represented groups
